The protected lesser horseshoe bat has put paid to hopes in the diocese of Killaloe from making a financial killing from the sale of a large parcel of land to interested developers.

A diocese which has paid out €2.67m to clerical sex abuse victims and recorded an estimated paper loss of €6m-€7m on investments is set for a €1.2m windfall.
