The union which represents the country’s community welfare officers has criticised a 60% drop in the amount paid out by the State in exceptional needs payments to those in financial difficulty.

The €208,000 spend by the Department of Social Protection on new signage for its Intreo centres came under fire yesterday.

The Government has signed a multi-million euro contract with An Post to provide cash payments to social welfare recipients.
