A district court judge yesterday jailed a man for five months, saying he was a menace for people living in the Blackrock area of Cork and, for some reason, had seemed to think he was an important person in that part of the city suburb.

Gardaí objected to bail being granted to a man who was arrested yesterday on a charge of threatening to kill a social worker.

Two water charge protestors denied they had committed any offences during a protest against the installation of Irish Water meters at a housing estate in Cork last August, but they were both convicted and fined.
