Professional carers and home helps looking after elderly people and other vulnerable individuals at home must be regulated and subject to inspections, the Government’s independent legal advisers have warned.

The Home Care Association says it is appalled but not surprised at the abuse and neglect of older people uncovered in last night's 'Prime Time' programme.

Health Minister Mary Harney was facing calls today to explain the lack of regulation of companies caring for older people in their home and the shocking treatment some of their staff engage in.
