Croatia’s second largest city of Split will close its zoo, which has been described by foreign tourists as the “worst in the world”.

Europe was struggling to restore roads and railways today after heavy snow caused hundreds of accidents, halted flights, downed power lines in Poland and trapped more than 160 people overnight on a frozen German road.

Officials in Croatia are still trying to identify the five tourists killed in an accident in the north-west of the country yesterday morning.
