Worries that Washington may not be able to help businesses as much as once thought knocked stock indexes down hard early on Monday, but they clawed back most of their losses and ended the day mixed.

Major US stock indexes rebounded, finishing higher for the third time in four days and lifting the Dow Jones industrial average to its second record close this month.
