A former Hawaii state worker who sent a false missile alert last month has said he is devastated for causing panic but was "100% sure" at the time that the attack was real.

A Hawaii Emergency Management Agency employee who mistakenly sent an alert warning of an incoming ballistic missile thought an actual attack was imminent, it has emerged.

Emergency management officials say a push alert that warned of an incoming ballistic missile to Hawaii today was a mistake.
