Stocks plunged in the final minutes of trading today sending the Dow Jones industrials 678 points, or more than 7%, to their lowest level in five years.

The stock market finished with a sharp loss today after bleak readings on the economy heightened investors’ fears of a recession. The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 140 points.
