Martin Schulz has quit as chairman of Germany's Social Democrats with immediate effect, saying it is time for a "renewal" of the centre-left party.

The euro was modestly weaker in midday trade but showing every sign that its stint above parity against the dollar may be drawing to an end, dealers said.
