MORE than 4.5 tonnes of drugs worth tens of millions of euro were removed from head shops in a Garda operation following a Government ban on May 11.

THE Data Protection Commissioner said a landmark court decision meant that the Irish Government could not go ahead with plans to retain DNA samples of people arrested, but not convicted, for crimes.

CIVIL liberties groups and legal experts have expressed concern at provisions in a bill extending the powers of gardaí.
