Nine out of ten fatal fires in the Republic last year occurred in homes which did not have working smoke alarms, it was revealed today.

MORE people could die in house fires because smokers are choosing to socialise at home since the smoking ban was introduced, the National Safety Council warned yesterday.

More than 450 people died in fires in Ireland in the last decade, it emerged today.
