Ireland is the newest member of the Asian Development Bank and despite austerity and hardship last year contributed $27m (€20m) to help fund facilities in developing countries.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said today the European Union will donate €100m for immediate tsunami relief and look at setting up a €1bn loan for affected nations.
