IN a decision with far- reaching implications for credit unions in Ireland and in the North, the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) has won its Supreme Court appeal against claims by the Competition Authority that some of its activities are anti-competitive.

Any tightening of our tax legislation to deter evasion and fraud is to be welcomed, but targeting credit unions to the same degree as commercial banks is something that needs serious pause for thought on the part of Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy.
