An extreme nationalist party allied to former strongman Slobodan Milosevic won Serbia’s crucial parliamentary elections today but failed to get the majority needed to govern on its own, according to exit polls.

Serbs had the pick today of voting Slobodan Milosevic’s allies into power and returning to international isolation or backing pro-democracy parties that ousted the authoritarian leader but later failed to live up to voters’ expectations.

A third attempt in less than a year to get Serbian voters to elect a Serbian president is to be made in November.
