The no people want us to send a clear message to Europe and the world that we, the proud Irish, will only accept those bits of ‘austerity’ which we like (ie none!), that we will only play by those already agreed rules which suit us (even fewer!) — and that, anyway, austerity is only a nasty type of kinky fringe-sadism thought up by a bunch of crazy academics in the Chicago School of Economics.

WE now face into an election which is unlikely to result in substantial changes to the provisions of the budget and Finance Bill.

MILTON Friedman, the architect of the current version of capitalism foisted on the world, must be looking down from wherever he is spending his afterlife and cracking a wry smile at the goings on in Ireland.

IN your editorial (October 16) you plead for a new way to bring more justice and equality in the world. You state that various economic models have failed, including socialism, but I would argue socialism hasn’t been allowed to succeed.
