Football Association chairman Greg Dyke is to push for trials of video replay technology as the debate over refereeing standards rages on.

Sources have reported that ITV plc, the British commercial TV broadcaster, plans to tell staff at its Central TV offices in Birmingham and Nottingham that some 400 jobs will go, according to an industry source.

ITV broadcaster Carlton’s failed foray into digital television left it with a bill of €156m it emerged today, as the company sought to draw a line under a ‘‘very difficult period’’.

The slump in ITV advertising is continuing to batter Carlton's performance, and the group is to cut a further 100 jobs.
