Rail passengers and motorists were facing further misery today as the great Christmas getaway was stalled by continued wet weather, and floods hit homes and shops.

Two former US Navy ships contaminated with chemicals, travelling to Britain from the United States, are expected to reach the Channel tomorrow, the Coastguard said today.
