British Telecom's record-breaking £5.9bn rights issue has failed to inspire the Footsie index of 100 leading shares.

The Footsie index of 100 leading stocks is following the lead of Asian and US markets by posting heavy losses in early trading.

The FTSE-100 Index is heading towards its lowest close since late 1998 as new economy stocks continued to fall heavily.
