Randy Lerner’s proposed takeover of Aston Villa moved a step closer today when it was announced Doug Ellis and Jack Petchey had sold their shares in the club.

CHAIRMAN Doug Ellis has insisted he will not sell Aston Villa to anyone he fears is only looking to asset-strip the club.

Aston Villa Shareholders’ Association chairman Jonathan Fear has claimed the current state of uncertainty over the future of the midlands club is “unhealthy for everyone at the club”.
