European car sales rose a meagre 1.2% last month as consumer confidence stagnated, according to data released by the Association of European Auto Manufacturers today.

New car sales in Western Europe were up by 2.9% last month.

The number of cars registered in western Europe fell by 2.9% last year despite strong December figures, as fears about the economy choked off demand.
