Slapping children amounts to torture and Ireland must ban it in all circumstances, human rights watchdog, the Council of Europe, has found.

France is not doing enough to prevent smacking and other kinds of corporal punishment of children, a top European human rights body has said.

A leading children’s charity has called for smacking of youngsters to be made illegal, saying that it is "degrading".
