A strike by Spirit Airlines pilots has shut down the budget carrier, stranding thousands of travellers.

The central terminal at New York’s LaGuardia Airport was evacuated today after a man entered the building with a fake bomb in a bag, police said.

Most of the largest US airlines will temporarily reduce services to Mexico, as swine flu fears keep many US travellers from venturing south of the border.
