British troops ended their combat operations in Afghanistan as they and US Marines handed over two huge adjacent bases to the Afghan military, 13 years after a US-led invasion launched the costly war against the Taliban.

Gunmen have attacked an outpost of a government-sponsored militia force in western Afghanistan, killing 10 people, officials said.

Afghan military officials say an operation has been launched to root out any Taliban who have reportedly infiltrated villages outside of southern Afghanistan’s largest city.
