The family of a 17-year-old girl injured in a rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers have thanked medics for saving her life after she had one of her legs amputated.

Fire officers could act as first responders in cases where an ambulance is not available, according to Patrick Fleming, chairperson of the Chief Fire Officers Association and head of the service in Dublin.
