Financial means tests carried out on the families of seriously ill children seeking medical cards could be scrapped under plans being discussed by Government.

Parents of children with Down’s syndrome have said they are “shocked and disappointed” that the Department of Education is to continue its policy of not recognising the condition as a disability.

An increasing number of people with motor neurone disease are having their medical cards withdrawn, while many applicants are being refused outright by the HSE.
