More than 65,000 drivers are on their third learner permit. Of these 36,814 of them are on their fifth or greater permit.

The Road Safety Authority has said it will take steps to cut waiting times for driving tests in light of a proposed Government crackdown on learner drivers getting behind the wheel unaccompanied.

Almost 3,200 learner drivers were caught driving without being accompanied by a qualified driver last year.
