Iraqi special forces are poised to enter Mosul in a bid to drive out Islamic State (IS) militants after fending off suicide car bombings as they swept into the last village on the city's eastern edge.

Iraq's elite counter-terrorism forces have pushed deeper into Islamic State-held Fallujah, more than two weeks after the operation to retake the city from the militant group began, a senior military official said.
