Ireland today pledged almost €1.2m to relief efforts in Pakistan as the Government called on the international community to wake up to the scale of the flood disaster.

LAST year, 122 humanitarian aid workers were killed and a further 138 were kidnapped or seriously injured in violent attacks. This toll is the highest on record.

THE charity Concern is worried people may be discouraged from becoming aid workers because of the increasingly precarious nature of the job in some countries.
