SPORTS fans soaked up a blistering atmosphere and some rare rays of sunshine as the bank holiday sporting bonanza got under way at a thronged Croke Park yesterday.

Champion jockey Pat Smullen was fortunate to escape with just a shaking from a three-horse pile-up in the closing stages of a sprint handicap as the Galway Festival ended this afternoon.
