ANDY RODDICK hopes to recapture his fitness in time for Wimbledon after being forced to retire from the first round of the French Open with a left ankle injury.

Greg Rusedski’s hopes of finishing the year as British number one were shattered today when he was beaten in straight sets by third seed Nikolay Davydenko in the second round of the Paris Masters Series.

The year-end battle for the world number one spot between Juan Carlos Ferrero and Andy Roddick moved closer to centre stage on Monday night at the Paris Masters Series event.
