Nato said today its massive earthquake relief operation in north-western Pakistan and Kashmir had reached its peak, with doctors and engineers repairing roads, schools and bridges before the harsh winter set in.

The estimated death toll in South Asia’s earthquake jumped to more than 87,000 today, the one-month anniversary of the disaster, as survivors prepared for the region’s savage Himalayan winter.
