A strong earthquake hit Japan’s northern coast near the nuclear power plant crippled in the 2011 tsunami.

A protest took place at the gate of a Japanese nuclear power plant as it was restarted — the first such facility to go back online since the country shut down all of its reactors for safety checks following the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

The utility company behind the unfolding Japanese nuclear disaster has reported a 571.7 billion yen (€5.17bn) quarterly loss, and its president is expecting the red ink to swell further over restoration and compensation costs.
