Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of northern Bilbao calling for an amnesty that would allow Eta prisoners to serve out the remainder of their sentences in their native Basque region rather than in jails further afield.

Two men suspected of involvement in the deadly 2006 ETA bombing at Madrid’s airport have been taken into custody in France, it is reported.

Israeli lawyer Arthur Roth lost his 15-year-old daughter Malki in a Jerusalem suicide blast. Kenneth Thompson’s mother died in the Oklahoma City bombing. Spanish journalist Irene Villa lost both legs in an Eta bombing 15 years ago.

Written off in recent months as possibly moribund after a string of arrests and thwarted attacks, the Basque separatist group Eta demonstrated today it’s still capable of spectacular violence.
