The founder of Astronomy Ireland has urged people to take "a day off work or school" to see the best lunar eclipse that will be seen from Ireland for the next 14 years.

Last night the world was treated to a spectacular lunar experience with a rare Blood Moon.

A total lunar eclipse is taking place tonight, with the moon expected to turn red in the longest eclipse this century.

Skygazers can look forward to an "unusual" celestial event on Wednesday night when a Blue Moon rises in the sky for the first time since July 2015.
