A third major storm in two weeks has hit the storm-battered north-east United States with blizzard conditions expected in some areas.

Millions of Americans were preparing to dig themselves out after a mammoth blizzard with hurricane-force winds and record-setting snowfall left at least 18 people dead and brought much of the US East Coast to an icy standstill.

A massive blizzard is swirling towards the eastern United States, with fears of snowfall as heavy as 1in to 3in an hour for 24 hours or more.
