The subdued level of bank lending in the economy is leaving the country short of the levels of credit required for long-term sustainable growth, a leading economist has warned.

Bank lending will remain a crucial source of funding for SMEs despite attempts to develop alternative forms of finance, according to Central Bank deputy governor Cyril Roux.

Representatives from Bank of Ireland, Ulster Bank and AIB are due before the Jobs Committee to face questions about their lending policies to small firms.
