VIDEO: A sustainable water bottle that you can eat
Introducing Ooho - the water bottle that feels like a fruit.
Designed by Skipping Rocks Lab, it's designed to be a sustainable replacement to plastic water bottles.
To create an Ooho, a blob of water is frozen then coated with a transparent, dual-layer membrane made of brown algae and calcium chloride. When the water melts, it is then sealed in a water tight and durable coating. To drink, you simply pierce the membrane.
And the best part?
The coating is edible so no waste.
"At the end of the day, you don’t have to eat it," inventor Pierre Paslier told the Guardian.
"But the edible part shows how natural it is. People are really enthusiastic about the fact that you can create a material for packaging matter that is so harmless that you can eat it."
It looks like it might take some getting used too but the inventors say that the potential benefits as a storage container would be vast, especially considering that sales of petroleum-based plastic water bottles hit 233 billion litters this year.
As well as being sustainable and better for the environment, it's much cheaper too, costing just one cent each.
