Aghadoe Heights distinctly unpretentious

There are lots of reasons to go to a spa.

The lucky spa-goer’s checklist would typically include relaxing, recharging, de-stressing, a bit of detoxing if possible and a whole lot of indulgence.

Arriving at Aghadoe Heights, perched as it is, in the national park, surveying the lushness of Lough Leane, it’s fairly obviously from the get-go that this is going to be a special experience.

And although it’s 5 star, with all the luxuries and trimmings, I got a distinctly unpretentious vibe about the hotel.

There’s a genuine friendly, welcoming atmosphere from the second you step into the rather fabulous foyer.

Descending into the cocoon of the spa, with clever design and subtle touches that enhance the natural tranquility of the surrounding lakes and woods, calmness reigns.

With design nods to the natural paradise outside the doors, lots of slate, the tinkle of flowing fountains, soft palettes of forest greens and grassy hues, it creates a clever space that enhances the experience on a number of levels. It’s almost a subconscious letting go of tension. I defy anyone not to relax here.

The menu of massages and facials, wraps and rituals on offer was initially quite daunting but the therapist was very thorough about what to expect during my treatment.

I went for the Voya marine leaf envelopment, 75 minutes, €155. Voya is a seaweed, organic Irish brand and I was assured it’s suitable for sensitive skin.

I was scrubbed and polished with Fucus and Laminaria seaweed - there’s a first time for everything, I suppose - then wrapped up like a mermaid (in my mind, at least) in more wild Atlantic seaweed, followed by a muslin cloth wrap to trap all those lovely nutritious oils.

While they were doing their stuff, a scalp massage sent the relaxation to the next level and we completed the treatment with a delicious organic body cream to seal the deal.

My skin was wonderfully soft and glowy - the therapist did say it was a slimming and toning treatment too, but I must reveal I didn’t suddenly drop 3 sizes, annoyingly.

It was a wonderful treatment and my checklist was ticked - and then some. The height of spa perfection.
