Advertising feature: Wake up to Westport this Mid-Term

Recapture that carefree holiday feeling this Mid-Term with an action packed trip to Westport, Co. Mayo.

Westport House’s Annual Halloween Fest

Turn up the volume on family fun with Westport House’s Annual Halloween Fest which runs all mid-term break (29th October - 6th November).

Get amongst it with the thrills ‘n’ chills of the Pirate Adventure Park – board the Westport House Express train ride, the swinging ship, cannonball run slide, sail the swan boats on the safe lake and take the plunge on the log flume water ride.

Halloween really kicks into high gear as the stunning 18th century house is dressed up as a (not too) scary haunted house, offering family workshops, the captivating White Witch’s story time for the little ones, Scrooge and other costumed characters as well as face painting.

All of these additional activities are included in the regular Westport House & Pirate Adventure Park ticket prices making Halloween Fest fantastic value for the family.

After an active day, its time to don your best Halloween costume and watch the Fireworks Extravaganza on the front lawn of Westport House where you can boogey to your favourite Halloween tunes.

Just be sure come dressed to impress – both grown-ups and children will be rewarded with fantastic prizes in the Costume Competition.

Get Out There

If you’re after a more relaxed activity to follow on a scare-tastic day out, you can escape the bustle of urban life on the Great Western Greenway, the longest off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland and winner of this year’s European Destination of Excellence.

Meandering along the old Westport to Achill railway line, this 42km traffic-free route is ideal for getting the family out on a bike for a spin.

Enjoy the views of the Nephin Mountains, Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick.

History buffs will love visiting the seven-arch bridge over the Black Oak and Bunnahoona rivers and Grace O’Malley’s Rockfleet Castle.

Bike hire is available in each town and village along the route – including trailers for the very small ones, bikes and tag-a-long bikes for the bigger kids.

And a bonus for families - if the 42km ride back is too much to contemplate then bike hire with a drop-off and collection service is now also available all along the route!

Don’t panic if the pace of these activities isn’t quite your style, adrenalin junkies can choose from a plethora of activities, set in some of the most beautiful scenery that Ireland has to offer.

You could learn how to sail on Clew Bay, take a horse ride along on the beach or try out archery lessons, battle the waves and learn to surf, strap yourself into a 12 foot plastic ball and roll down a hill (a.k.a. zorbing) or challenge each other in a laser combat game.

Cultural Delights

The 36th annual Westport Arts Festival (1st – 9th October) is an eclectic mix of live music performances, exhibitions and literary readings. Families are welcomed with a variety of interactive and educational children’s shows including Fidget Feet, an awe–inspiring mix of theatre and aerial circus that is sure to entertain the entire family. Culture Vultures can soak up the atmosphere at one of the many theatre and literary performances scheduled, while movie buffs are treated to a nostalgic line up of cinema greats in a week full of drive–in movies.

If a blend of breathtaking scenery, fantastic festivals and exciting activities sounds good to you, why not treat the family to a break in Westport this mid-term?
