THE organisers of the Kilkee Maritime Festival could hardly have chosen a more suitable guest of honour than rowing legend Sean McGowan, who became the first Irishman to row solo across the Atlantic earlier this year.

The festival runs from July 16 to July 18 and features a huge amount of activities to include curraching, surfing, canoeing and windsurfing, to raft-building, underwater treasure hunts, competitions and races, as well as much activity in the local pubs and on the streets. Check out the details on

IT’S only barely past mid-summer, but there are forces lurking out there looking to drum up business for the cold winter ahead. The Travel Department is in the midst of plotting an Italian getaway to help ring in 2011. The Lake Garda package is based on a stay at a four-star hotel and comes in at €899 including taxes.

Departure for this seven night package is on December 29 from Dublin and includes full-day tours of Lake Garda, Venice and Verona. Details from or telephone 01 637 1600.

A group cancellation for a SAGA Holidays tour of five European countries has prompted the company to significantly cut the price of the package. The reduction of €500 from the original price of €1,999 is only on offer for bookings made by this coming Monday.

The fully-escorted 14-day tour leaves Dublin on August 3 and takes in Belgium, France, Austria, Germany and Italy.
