Spain are the reigning champions of the World Cup following a 1-0 victory over Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
Tensions ran high during extra time after 90 minutes of looking in anticipation at a 0-0 scoreboard and many attempts from Spain’s strikers.
It was Spain’s Ferran Torres whose goal turned the game around and secured Spain the top spot in the tournament, with people all over the world celebrating the win – from the Berwick Fountain in Cork city centre to the streets of Barcelona and the structural ruins of Gaza.
During the celebrations after the final whistle, Argentinian players let the side down when they became aggressive toward the Spanish players, rather than accepting defeat with dignity.
Their behaviour has been scrutinised on social media, as well as the morals of FIFA president Gianni Infantino and the president of the United States, Donald Trump, both of whom were booed in the stadium when they walked onto the pitch.

De massale steun voor Spanje is niet toevallig. Het land heeft zich de afgelopen jaren nadrukkelijk uitgesproken voor de rechten van het Palestijnse volk en erkende in 2024 officieel de Palestijnse staat.
