A few years ago I was on Erasmus in Barcelona. Bed-bound with what felt like a never-ending cold, I decided this would be the best time to watch Gilmore Girls for the first time. More than 2,200 kilometres away from home, facing the future of finishing my degree and embarking on my career as a journalist, with a dash of extreme homesickness — I watched the single most heartwarming and heartbreaking show about a single mom and her daughter.

The days I watched through are a haze, but as the final episode drew to a close, I was greeted by my exact scenario. A daughter of a single mother saying goodbye as she moved thousands of kilometres away to pursue her dream job as a journalist.
