It was a warm, pleasant day in Cork. Whatever drizzle was expected to move in from the west stayed clear of the deep south. It was a good start.

But the temperature in the Douglas examination hall on June 12, 1974, would more likely have been described as sticky, the first day Leaving Cert nerves edging up the mercury enough to make us all a little hot under the collar.
