Maura Derrane's sister Rita dies following long illness

Rita Derrane, the sister of Today Show host Maura Derrane, has passed away following a long illness.

Tributes have been paid to "kind and gentle" Rita, who passed away on Tuesday at University Hospital Galway. Originally from Inis Mór, she had been living in Knocknacarra in Galway.

According to RIP.ie, her funeral will take place at Séipéal Naomh Brīd and Naomh Oilibhéar Pluincéad, Kilronan on November 17. She will be laid to rest in Reilig Chill Éinne.

The death notice read: “Dearly missed by her loving family, daughter Kila, mother Bridgie, father Mattie (deceased) sisters Maura, Róisín and Barbara, Uncle Pádraig, nephews Ethan and Cal brothers in law John and Rob, cousins and extended family.” 

Tributes on the notice describe Rita as a "vibrant and kind person".

Maura Derrane and her sisters grew up on a farm on Inis Mór. The siblings enjoyed a family holiday in 2019 and jetted off to Portugal together for their first trip away in 20 years.

Speaking to RSVP at the time, Maura said they spent the time reminiscing about the past.
