Catherine Connolly has become the tenth president of Ireland at a ceremony today at Dublin Castle. Ms Connolly is our third female president and her Irish-designed purple ensemble seems to be a nod to a similar outfit worn by Mary Robinson in 1990 upon her election.
At her inauguration today, Ms Connolly wore a monochrome outfit, with trousers, shirt and coat all in the same rich shade of purple, a hue she often wears.
Her clothing is by Irish designer Louise Kennedy and Ms Connolly appears to be wearing the Maya double-face wool coat, with the Orelia silk blouse and the Julie wool wide-leg trousers from the new autumn collection.
In a recent post on Instagram by the designer, the look is described as “a study in tonal dressing”, adding that the items are “the perfect shade of purple.

"Soft silks, relaxed wool, and gentle sheen come together for a look that feels polished yet effortless. The perfect way to embrace colour this autumn.”
Louise Kennedy founded her label in 1983 and has dressed Presidents Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese, along with members of the British, European, and Middle Eastern royal families. She has designed the Aer Lingus uniforms, with a refreshed look for the airline's staff in 2020 updating her previous 1998 designs. Ms kennedy also designed the first national judicial robes for the Irish Supreme Court.
Here’s how the brand describes each element of Ms Connolly's look:
