My ultimate cheat sheet to heat-proof make-up — with tips from celebrity makeup artists

It’s been unusually hot for the last few months, but the good news is, rising temperatures don’t have to mean melted makeup.

Whether you’re heading to a summer wedding, going to a festival or a concert, on holiday, or just trying to beat the heat in your everyday routine due to oily skin, an active lifestyle or a hormonal propensity (thanks menopause!) mastering heat proof makeup is all about smart prep, the right products, and strategic application.

These are some of my favourite products to ensure that the heat and humidity don’t send my makeup south.

Benefit The POREfessional Face Primer

Primer

Benefit’s The POREfessional is the OG primer — and for good reason. It blurs pores, controls shine, and helps makeup stay put, making it the perfect choice for oily and combination skin in hot and humid weather. €38, Millies.

MAC Pro Longwear pots

Eyeshadow base

MAC’s Pro Longwear Paint Pots help heat-proof eye makeup by creating a long-wearing, cream-to-powder base that acts as an excellent primer. They’re water, sweat, and humidity resistant, preventing creasing, fading, and smudging in warm conditions. By enhancing eyeshadow adhesion and controlling oil, they lock your eye makeup in place for extended wear. Ideal all year round for oily lids too. Plus, they last forever. €26, Boots.

The make-up artists’ top tips

Looking to keep your look fresh, flawless, and locked in no matter the temperature? I asked three make-up artists who have worked with celebrities including Dua Lipa, Hailey Bieber and Doireann Garrihy, for their tips.

Katie Jane Hughes

Don’t bother with moisturiser. Use SPF, the bare minimum of skincare products, then a full coverage concealer or foundation just where you need it and powder multiple times a day. And remember, makeup is a foreign body — if it comes off, that’s normal.

Paula Callan

Spray setting spray on your makeup brush before you apply each product to ensure their longevity. And use a primer for extra staying power.

Michelle Kinsella Lee

Tailor your skincare to your skin type. Hydrate if dry, but avoid over-prepping if you’re oily or combination as makeup may slide off. Setting spray is best used alongside powder to lock in your look, but don’t rely on it alone. Blotting papers can be used to absorb excess oil, without building up layers of powder. At hot events, a mini handheld fan can help manage sweat and overheating.
