Trend of the week: Textured fabric

Make maximalism your new season maxim, says Annmarie O’Connor.
Trend of the week: Textured fabric

INSPIRATION

When it comes to textured fabric, brocade and jacquard are its grand dowagers. With a history extending back to the Italian Renaissance, its embossed and embroidered pedigree is more than surface effect.

This season sees a redux of such elaborate metallic patterns across ready-to-wear and accessories, insinuating a shift from high society to a true fashion democracy.

RUNWAY HACKS

? DIAL IT DOWN: Pair with a ‘borrowed from the boys’ military jacket (Prada) or heritage tweed top (Dries Van Noten) for a quieter take on the trend.

? DO DETAIL: Look to accents like a brocade bag or shoe to give a minimalist look maximalist appeal.

? POLO, ANYONE? Show some neck and pair your jacquard strappy dress with a polo neck and tights for that extra ‘wear’ mileage.

? AFTER EIGHT: A jacquard suit makes a sleek alternative to the party dress, especially with this season’s loafers.
