On the red carpet: Nick Jonas, Gigi Hadid, Rita Ora, Z LaLa

Those who ignore fashion history are doomed to commit some dire faux pas.

And it looks as though Nick Jonas had no knowledge of David Beckham’s infamous head-to-toe biker misstep while dressing for Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. Both men wore Versace.

Gigi Hadid went all-out LA goddess on the same red carpet, choosing a gorgeous sunflower-yellow dress to compliment her post-summer tan and golden tresses. The bodysuit-gown hybrid is by London designer Emilia Wickstead.

Not to be upstaged, serial barely-dresser Rita Ora rocked a Vera Wang gown with cut-outs, a vertiginous slit and plunging neckline. Plus, extra-large ostrich feathers! Her sandals are by Stuart Weitzman. She definitely got attention on a night there wasn’t much to spare.

Had anyone outside LA heard of Z LaLa before she stepped out in a Dior Tutankhamen- inspired dress from 2004? We all remember Nicki Minaj’s early scare-them-til-you-make-it outfits, and I can only assume the new-ish popstar has adopted the same strategy.
