Product watch: This season’s hot colours

Update your makeup for autumn with this season’s hottest colours. Rachel Marie Walsh reports.

Product watch: This season’s hot colours

Cherry Lips

After three seasons of orange lippys, reds have once again found fashion’s favour. Smashbox Be Legendary Lip Lacquer, €24, is my top pick for this look. The colours are wonderfully rich and the formula is extra-long wearing. The glossy finish wears off evenly, leaving a matte stain that won’t bleed without cleanser. Try Firecracker or Legendary for a knockout pout. Selfie tip: Blot the glossy outer layer off before you pose. If light hits a gloss the wrong way it can make lips look uneven in photos.

Modern Blues

Blue eye shadow – that awful 80’s staple – is also back on fashion’s radar. Instead of coating lids in a single deep blue à la Kim Wilde, keep it modern with different shades and finishes. Dior’s 5 Couleurs Palette in Carré Bleu, €57, offers a choice of four textures. The rich matte makes a distinctive liner while sheer satin, wet-look and glitter shadows take your look from day to night.

The Metallic Pout

Beauty picks up on this season’s fashion trend for metallics with bronze, lilac foil and even silver lipsticks. This look is very strong and futuristic, with makeup artists like NARS’ James Kaliardos using metallic eyeliner to make sure it stayed put on the catwalk. Sheer or gloss formulas make metal more accessible. Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Colour Luminous Lip Gloss in Glamorous Gold, €22.50, is an awesome way to get the look and not just because of the colour. The formula provides a mix of moisturisers and peptides that keeps lips pillow-soft.

Ballerina Eyes

Off-duty ballerina beauty was seen at autumn shows like Diane von Furstenberg, where lavender and lilac cream shadows were washed over lids. BareMinerals 5-in-1 BB Cream Shadows, €20, are perfect for achieving this look. They offer broad-spectrum sun protection and provide flattering, matte colour with a hint of radiance. The cream is easily blended and does not crease or flake. The formula is irritant-free and works well as a primer for other shadows. Deeper shades really do help to minimise the appearance of fine lines as the brand claims.

Peachy Cheeks

Peach blush is a suit-everyone product that warms the complexion and compliments bronzer. Benefit Majorette Boost Booster Blush, €33.50, is a sheer, lightweight cream. The colour can be built to suit your skin-tone and you get a lot of product for your money. The formula contains quite a lot of fragrance, which can irritate sensitive skin.
