Product watch: the best “no makeup” makeup

Whether you’re at a beach barbecue or a summer wedding, natural, bare-skinned makeup trumps a full face every time.

Product watch: the best “no makeup” makeup

Nude Lids

Bobbi Brown is the high priestess of barely-there makeup and the summery look she created for Kate Upton this season is gorgeous. The Bobbi Brown Sand Eye Palette, €58, has a range of creamy, neutral shadows ideal for daytime layering, a black shadow for your liner brush and two subtle metallic shades for evening.

Fill Lines

There is no point in trying to pull-off a bare-skinned look if your face is not prepared. Exfoliate the night before with a Beta Hydroxy Acid exfoliant if skin is oily/combination, or an Alpha Hydroxy Acid lotion if skin is dry/sun-damaged. Smashbox Photo Finish More Than a Primer Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment, €34.50, is a great BHA option and I like Olay Regeneriste Night Renewal Elixir, €27.12, if skin is parched. After your SPF moisturiser, apply a primer that fills line and benefits skin, like MAC Prep+Prime Instant Line Filler, €21, but only where absolutely needed. Follow up with a dewy base like Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup, €34.

Kitten Eyes

Slightly tapered, “cat eyes” liner is a daytime staple for many, especially if you’re often tired or have hooded eyes. A cleaner, shorter line can define eyes while sticking to your “natural” goal.

For some pre-mascara definition, trace a black gel liner, such as Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner, €25, along the upper lash line, starting from a pinkie’s width from the inner corner.

Extend slightly upwards before reaching the outer corner but not beyond.

Strong Brows

Beauty has moved beyond its obsession with Cara Delevingne’s bushy brows towards a slimmer but still well-defined shape. Check out Bobbi Brown Dark Brow Kit, €35, which comes with a tweezers and angled brow brush.

Nude Pencil/Lip Stain

Forgoing lippy can be scary, especially if your pout is small or slightly uneven.

Kevyn Aucoin comes to the rescue with The Flesh Tone Lip Pencil, €28 at SpaceNK, a neutral pencil that defines and enhances the lips without a harsh line (provided you first match one of the nine shades to your pout).

Gently play up lips’ natural colour with a sheer stain like Clarins Crayon Baume Levres, €19.50.

Fluttery Lashes

Natural lashes need definition more than anything else, so spoolies and a quality curler are essential.

Skip the falsies and lengthen and separate with a coat of Maybelline The Colossal Go Extreme, €10.49.

Highlighter

Metallic highlighters look artificial in the sun.

Clinique Fresh Bloom All-Over Colour in Peony Blend, €34.50, is a soft radiance powder.

Sweep over the face for a subtle glow or over cheekbones to highlight.
